Calypso originates in Greek Mythology as a sea nymph living on the island of Malta. In Homer's The Odyssey the hero, Odysseus, is held on her island for seven years during his epic journey home. She promises Odysseus immortality should he stay with her, but he leaves the island to return to his wife Penelope.
There were others who bore this same name in Greek and Roman mythology, all being daughters of titans or gods.
It is also the name of a genus of orchids, as well as a style of music popularly found in the Caribbean.
